Mathematics
The Alaska Mathematics Standards prepare Alaska students to be competitive on the national and world stage. These standards are a set of specific, rigorous expectations that build students’ conceptual understanding, mathematical language, and application of processes and procedures coherently from one grade to the next so all students will be prepared for post-secondary experiences.

Alaskan students who take Dynamic Learning Map assessments are instructed and assessed on Essential Elements (EEs). EEs are grade-level-specific expectations about what students with the most significant cognitive disabilities should know and be able to do. EEs are related to college- and career-readiness standards for students in the general population.

Assessments
The AK STAR summative assessment for mathematics is administered in grades 3-9. The assessment is designed to measure a student’s understanding of the skills and concepts outlined in the Alaska Mathematics Standards. For more information about the AK STAR assessment please visit the AK STAR: Alaska System of Academic Readiness website.
The AK STAR assessment tools below may be helpful for teachers.
- Mathematics Achievement Level Descriptors (Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grade 9) in Word format, or in the Achievement Level Explorer Tool, allows educators to:
- access the progression of grade-level performance expectations defined by the Alaksa standards-based achievement level descriptors
- analyze student performance by achievement level
- plan instruction so all students have the opportunity to learn and meet the expectations for their highest levels of achievement
- analyze student progress and identify target standards for growth
- The AK STAR Educators guide to Student Readiness provides answer keys, along with detailed information identifying the academic standards addressed by each question in the student practice tests. Educators may utilize these items in various instructional contexts—such as displaying them for class warm-ups or exit tickets or assigning the practice tests for either individual or group completion—to ensure students are acquainted with the format, tools, and item types featured on the AK STAR assessment.
- The AK STAR Student Tutorial video has helpful information about how to use a protractor, ruler, online calculator, and graphing features.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) website features a comprehensive question library containing vetted and reviewed items available for classroom use. While most questions are designed for 4th and 8th grade students, they can be used in various grade levels, including multi-grade classrooms. Educators can either create custom quizzes using these questions or use the pre-made five-question pop quizzes available in subjects like science, math, reading, and social studies. Each quiz includes an answer key and constructed response items.
